  •      When my mom, sister and I moved to Alamogordo, New Mexico in 1979, the Old Alamogordo Depot was still standing.  Alamogordo was born as a railroad town and although the original depot had been just a small wooden shack, it was later replaced by a rare 2-storied depot that was the pride of the town.  Sadly, it was eventually demolished to make room for a grocery store parking lot.
  •      As a lover of history, I hate to see charming old buildings destroyed in the name of "progress".  I used to hear the train whistle while lying in my bed at night and it almost seemed to say to me, "remember me..."  Old buildings have personality and stories, just like people.  When I memorialize old historic structures in a painting, I feel like I'm doing something to help keep the memory of those historic places alive.

  •      I found this barn owl at the historic Alameda Park Zoo in Alamogordo, New Mexico.  I watched him having dinner inside his wooden box one fall evening and imagined that he either didn't appreciate my presence or that he thought I had my eye on the hunk of raw meat he was protecting with his impressive talons.
  •      It was nearing Christmas when I was working on this painting, and I was frequently (and pleasantly) interrupted by old friends who stopped to visit when they saw me painting outside my house.  I then understood how the owl had felt when I interrupted his dinner.

On June 1, 2018, I was honored to attend the 150th anniversary of the signing of the treaty between the United States and the Navajo people at Fort Sumner, New Mexico.  At the end of the day, the sunrays broke through the clouds, forming an hourglass shape with a tipi that had been set up for the occasion.

The empty tipi reminded me of the nine brave Apache men who stayed behind with lit campfires to fool the troops, while the remaining Mescalero Apache people, who had managed to survive the tragic Bosque Redondo experiment, fled back to their homelands.

In the 1850s, when Native New Mexican Hispanic people from the upper Rio Grande began to move south and settle the village that became known as San Patricio, they used the nearby hill as a look-out to watch for menacing banditos and raiding Apaches.

When artist, Peter Hurd, established his home and studio in San Patricio, he named his ranch after the look-out which the locals had referred to as centinela.  Today, Peter's windmill still stands at base of Sentinel Hill...keeping silent vigil over the now peaceful Hondo Valley.  I first became aware of Peter Hurd's work because my grandmother loved windmills and had saved a magazine featuring his painting, "Oasis".  Although I didn't get to meet him, I never walked past that windmill on his ranch without thinking of him.

A fellow artist once told me, "inspiration is all around you, if you condition your eyes to see it."  New Mexico's inspiration can sometimes be overwhelming due to the sheer volume of charm and beauty lurking around every unexpected corner.  I discovered this simple scene while walking my dog down an unfamiliar alley in Taos.  There was surely divine intervention, however, because coming upon this spot at a different time of day or on a day with clouds would have eliminated the interesting angles of the shadows.

The unusual "Queen of the Night" cactus produces a white, fragrant bloom...but the beauty is short-lived.  Many species bloom very rarely and only at night.  The flowers are wilted by morning.  For this reason, the cactus has been revered in many cultures.  In India, it is referred to as "night lotus" and it is believed that the wishes of people who pray to God while the flower is blooming will be fulfilled.  In China, this flower represents someone who has an impressive but brief moment of glory, as we refer to a "flash in the pan".   In Japan, the bloom is known as the "Beauty Under the Moon".

I was fortunate enough to notice this beauty in Alamogordo, New Mexico, along the route where I walked my dog.  I only saw it bloom this one time and have never seen it since.

While accompanying my artist boyfriend on a business trip to Santa Fe, we stopped to visit a friend in a quiet neighborhood just a few blocks from the historic plaza.  Across the street, I noticed this unique gate, topped by a metal silouette of a raven.

Although I loved the scene, I knew that painting the metal raven as it really looked would give the impression that I was not very good at painting birds.  So instead of the two-dimensional metal raven, I found a couple of live models near my home and replaced the Santa Fe raven with the real thing.

  •        The oldest and most iconic building in Ruidoso, New Mexico was built by a Civil War veteran and Fort Stanton Army Captain named Paul Dowlin.  The mill became a rendezvous point for early residents of the settlement of Dowlin's Mill (later renamed Ruidoso) as well as surrounding communities.  The building not only served farmers bringing in grain, but could cut lumber, was a butchery, the local dance hall, general store and post office.  In 1877, Dowlin sold half interest in the mill to another Fort Stanton veteran named Frank Lesnett.  Lesnett's wife traveled by stagecoach from Chicago and when she arrived, she and her husband discovered blood in front of the mill.  The day before, Paul Dowlin had been shot and killed in front of the building that still bears his name.  Sadly, the old mill caught fire in 2017 (although the water wheel survived the blaze).  Restoration efforts are currently underway.

  •      I named this painting of the magnificent St. Francis de Paula church in Tularosa, New Mexico "Trinity" after it was completed.   I suddenly noticed a repetition of threes...three bell towers, three crosses and three butterflies.  The number three has always been significant in my family.  My mom, sister and I considered ourselves a unit of three.  My entire birthday is divisible by three.  In astrological belief, a trine (one-third of a circle) indicates harmony and is a source of innate creativity and artistic guidance.
  •      Ultimately, the spiritual significance of the Holy Trinity made the name a perfect fit for this piece.  It is one of my favorites.

  •      A young Franciscan Friar named Father Albert Braun came to the Mescalero Apache Reservation in the early 1900s and immediately saw the need for a new church.  After service in WWI, he returned with a dream to build a grand new church in the style of the European cathedrals that would honor both the Apache People and those who had died in the war.  His mission took 20 years.
  •    I passed the church many times over the years, but will never forget the night that I was driving home for Christmas on Dec. 23rd, and happened to pass the church just as snow started to descend from the low-lying clouds.  At Christmas, the tipi outside the church is often illuminated from the inside with the silouettes of the Nativity visible inside.

Like many rural New Mexico churches, the old San Patricio church (built in 1885) was built with mud, straw and faith, by the hands of the local settlers.  The church-yard cemetery remembers those early inhabitants, some with ornate memorials made by family members and some with graves marked only by a simple wooden cross.

Although a new church now serves the descendants of those early homesteaders, the valley residents still honor the old church with a musical processional each St. Patrick's Day.  One of my most beloved memories is attending a Christmas Eve service in the old sanctuary.  Only candles were used, the music was acoustic and the service was entirely spoken in Spanish.  It was magical.

  •      During a torturous  romantic break-up, I spent a lot of time walking the ranch and pondering where life would take my next.  I knew that I would soon have to leave all that had become familiar and that I had come to love so dearly.
  •      I wanted to leave something behind to make sure that I wasn't forgotten by my love after I was gone.  So like Johnny Appleseed, I went about the ranch scattering Hollyhock seeds in various locations.  After mending our friendship several years later, I couldn't help but smile when I saw the hollyhocks blooming around the ranch.  I like to believe they remind him of me.
